Why We Love Dr. Martinez

blue tooth icon

Dr. Martinez spent many years learning how to be the best possible children's dentist. After finishing college at Arizona State University, he went on to earn his dental degree from Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health. But he didn't stop there – he completed extra training specifically in children's dentistry at Bronx Lebanon Hospital Center. He also received special training to work with children who have unique healthcare needs, making sure he can provide great care to every child who visits his office.

Dr. Martinez is recognized as one of the top pediatric dentists in Phoenix. He's board-certified, which means he's passed rigorous exams showing his expertise in children's dentistry. He works at both Phoenix Children's Hospital and Chandler Regional Medical Center, and he helps coordinate dental care for Special Olympics athletes in Arizona. To stay at the forefront of pediatric dental care, Dr. Martinez is an active member of several professional organizations, including the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, and the Arizona Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. He's also a member of the American Dental Association, Arizona Dental Association, and the American Academy of Developmental Medicine and Dentistry. These memberships help him stay current with the latest advances in children's dental care.

When Dr. Martinez isn't helping kids achieve their best smiles, he's spending time with his own family. He and his wife Irina love taking their son Henry to local parks and playgrounds, and they're big fans of family movie nights at home. As a dad himself, he brings that same caring, patient approach to treating his young patients. He's also deeply involved in the community, serving on the board of the local YMCA and participating in programs that help make Phoenix a healthier place for all families. Dr. Martinez currently serves as the section chief of dentistry at Phoenix Children's Hospital

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a regular dentist and a pediatric dentist?

Pediatric dentists are experts in delivering kid-friendly care! The dental needs of children are different from the needs of adults. A pediatric dentist must complete an additional two years of pediatric-focused training compared to a general dentist - that’s a total of 6 years of education after college. While general dentists can care for a wide age range of patients, pediatric dentists, like Dr. Martinez, focus exclusively on children's dental issues. They undergo extensive training and education to be able to care for little smiles, specifically. A large part of this advanced training is focused on pediatric behavior management techniques that facilitate a comfortable and safe environment for children. This means they can provide more individualized, compassionate, and gentle care for little smiles.

At what age should my child start seeing the dentist?

According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, it is recommended that you schedule your child’s first dental visit once they turn one year old, or whenever their first tooth emerges (whichever comes first). We will be able to check to make sure their oral health is developing properly and answer any questions you may have about how to care for their teeth. But don’t worry, if your child is a bit older and they haven’t visited the dentist yet, the best time to start is now! The earlier they start seeing the dentist, the more familiarized with the process they will become.

Why Does My Child Need Sedation?

Sedation can be a good option for children who:

  • Are anxious about upcoming treatment
  • Require a large amount of care, or the dental treatment being performed is complex
  • Are unable to safely be treated with minimally invasive options
  • Have severe dental anxiety (afraid of needles, drills, etc.)
