We use the latest technology to take precise measurements and create custom-designed crowns tailored to your child’s tooth.

Dental Crowns

What Is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a cap that goes over the entire tooth. It covers the top part of the tooth all the way down to the gum line, and it helps protect any damaged areas from further damage. Crowns can also be used to cover teeth with fillings to improve their appearance or strength.

When Is a Dental Crown for Kids or Teens Needed?

Your dentist may recommend a dental crown if a tooth is:

🍎Fractured or chipped

🍎Severely decayed or damaged beyond the point of being able to be repaired with just a filling

🍎Too weak to support a large dental filling

Why do Baby Teeth Need Crowns?

Baby teeth (primary teeth) are important for many reasons, even though they eventually fall out. Baby teeth help maintain space for permanent teeth, aid in speech and eating development, and contribute to a child’s self-esteem. Removing a baby tooth before it is ready to fall out can create alignment issues and cause adult teeth to come in crooked, resulting in extensive orthodontic work. A dental crown can help strengthen the tooth and protect it from further damage until the natural root is ready to fall out on its own.

Types of Dental Crowns

Stainless Steel Crowns

Stainless steel (silver crowns) crowns are a popular choice for kids and teens, as they are durable and affordable. They can also be applied quickly in the office and don’t require multiple visits like other crowns. However, they are visible when your child smiles or talks, so some may not be comfortable with the look.

Stainless Steel Crowns With White Facing

These crowns are similar to regular stainless steel crowns, but they have a white facing, making them less noticeable and more aesthetically pleasing.

Composite Crowns

Composite crowns (white crowns) are made from a material similar to the tooth-colored filling material used for cavities. They are durable, less noticeable, and can be used on front teeth. However, they may wear down quicker than stainless steel crowns and require more maintenance.

Zirconia Crowns

Zirconia crowns (porcelain crowns) are made from zirconium, a strong and natural-looking ceramic material. They are highly durable and long-lasting and custom-made to match the natural color of your child’s other teeth. They are the most expensive of the crown options but also the most aesthetically pleasing.

Dental Crown Procedure

Getting a dental crown is a relatively simple procedure, and the process usually only takes one visit, depending on the type of crown used.

First, Dr.Martinez will examine and take x-rays of your child’s teeth to determine if a crown is necessary. If it is determined that a crown is the best option, Dr. Martinez will discuss the different types of crowns we offer and help you decide which one is best for your child’s needs.

Next, Dr.Martinez will numb the area around the tooth with a local anesthetic to make sure your child is comfortable during the procedure. Dr.Martinez will discuss sedation options with you during the consultation. If it is decided that sedation will be used, he will administer it at this point in the procedure.

Next, he will prepare the tooth by filing it down to make room for the crown. Impressions of your child’s teeth will then be taken to create a custom-fit crown. Metal crowns are pre-fabricated, meaning they are ready to be applied in the same visit.

All crowns, white zirconia crowns and stainless steel crowns, are completed in one visit for the convenience and safety of the child. The crown is fabricated then cemented in place, and your child can return to normal activities. It is important to note that dental crowns require regular maintenance, just like other teeth. They must be brushed and flossed daily and receive routine check-ups with Dr.Martinez every six months. Regular care will help ensure the crown is properly sealed and remains in good condition for many years.

Are There Any Risks?

Dental crowns are considered a safe and effective way to restore damaged teeth. However, there is always a measure of risk involved with any dental procedure, including the possibility of infection or allergic reaction to the material used for the crown. It is important that you discuss any potential risks and concerns with Dr.Martinez prior to treatment so he can ensure the best outcome for your child.
